I wouldn't exactly call myself a 'real' photographer - I have a serious day job in global change projects - but I do get an immense amount of pleasure from taking photos (reportage being my preference). I also love to immerse myself in world music and dance.
After moving from Perth to London 14 years ago, I have now emigrated for the second time in my life and I have now joined the community of Australian expatriates calling Singapore home. In my 14 years in London, I was fortunate to have travelled to the Gulf (for work) and North Africa (for holidays). North Africa, whilst culturally very different to Australia, always tempered my homesickness for heat, red earth and eucalyptus trees. Beyond just travelling there, I also decided I would learn more about some of the things I have enjoyed on my holidays - music and food.
So in 2008 I did three terms of bellydance lessons (with the lovely Fleur Estelle) and I also went back to Marrakech to learn to cook zalouk and tagine of lamb at La Maison Arabe. But, in term three after a particularly nasty case of stage fright, I decided that I was a better cook than a dancer and hung up my coin belt. At least by taking the photos though I can still be there without actually having to get back on stage myself!! So, thanks to my year of learning, I now have a good understanding of choo choo shimmies, mayas and sultan arms - even if I am still doing my best to work out my aperture setting from my shutter speed!
Anyway, despite my lack of technical prowess, the short of it is that people tell me they like the style of my pictures. I hope you will too. Insha'allah!
